Gramophone - the icon for the Grammy's

Opinion: Best dressed at the Grammy Awards - my favorite looks from music's biggest night

Fashion is a big part of every award show, regardless of what the awards are for. These are the stars that won at the game of fashion.

The 2020 Grammy Awards were held on Jan. 26 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The red carpet was truly a sight to see. Here are my picks for Best Dressed:

Category: Individuals

The first pick is Ariana Grande. She stunned in a Giambattista Valli gown. The gown looked like a fashion-forward Cinderella; the “Thank U Next” singer doesn’t need to lose her glass slippers and walk the red carpet with a man anytime soon. Grande is the kind of girl you root for, and it’s stellar when she arrives and gives us a fashion moment.

My second pick is Shawn Mendes. Mendes brought his style A-game in a red suit by Louie Vutton. It was bold and funky, without being over the top. He walked the red carpet without girlfriend Camila Cabello, but they are still very much a couple. He is still growing up, and it will be fun to see what fashion choices he makes at future red carpet events.

My third pick is BeBe Rexha. She shined in her Christian Cowan number. It was fabulous to see her not in a gown, but in a pantsuit. It was edgy and sexy, yet powerful.  I was a little nervous her jacket would not stay on, but otherwise this look was a perfect choice for music’s biggest night. I’m not a fan of her music, but that doesn’t mean I can’t pick her as one of my Best Dressed.

Category: Couples

One of my favorite couples was Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner. Jonas was relaxed chic in Ermenegildo Zegna XXX and Turner was playful rock in Louis Vuitton. Usually I’m looking at what Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra wear, but tonight Joe and Sophie had my gaze. It’s cool to see more relaxed looks on the red carpet, but only if they are done right. It was nice to see Joe not in a suit, but still stylish and dressed to the nines.

Another couple that stood out - in a wonderful way - was Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton. Stefani’s Dolce & Gabbana dress and LeSilla boots are not something I would typically like, but it fits Stefani’s personality well and it’s a fabulous choice for her. Is Shelton trying to be Best Dressed on a red carpet? Absolutely not. Is it my favorite suit in the world? Not exactly, but this cowboy cleaned up nicely and his suit complemented Stefani’s dress well.

The Grammy Awards red carpet is one of my favorite evenings of the year. Both music and fashion run through my veins, and it’s a night that combines both. I get to hear about all the music that has been out over the past year and also see what’s hot in fashion. Most of the looks of the night weren’t up to par. It’s always ridiculous to me that stars who have stylists and wear dresses by big name designers can’t do better. There were many moments where the fashion fell flat, but there were also some good choices made by some of the biggest stars in Tinseltown.
