The Eastern Michigan University Student Government held its summer summit orientation meeting Sept. 3 where four new senators were introduced to the organization. The entire Student Government was present to discuss what members, both new and returning, plan to bring to the table this year. The nearly seven hour meeting began by welcoming new thoughts and ideas to this year’s agenda.
Guest speakers, such as Director of Diversity and Community Involvement Steven Bryant, started a conversation within the organization about how its members plan to incorporate diversity and inclusiveness within their actions and decisions throughout the year to come. The new senators demonstrate eagerness and enthusiasm to make EMU a better place for its students.

Environmental sustainability, physical and mental health awareness and support, access to resources and programs that will enable all EMU students to perform their best, both academically and outside of the classroom.

Why did you join student government?
I think that in order to be a responsible student you kind of have to go where the decisions that are impacting you the most are being made. If I can pay it forward to make sure that my tuition and the tuition that everyone else is paying is spent appropriately and that the right decisions are being made to the highest benefit of Eastern students that’s really what I’m looking for.
What campus issues will you be focused the most on?
All things budgetary. Also campus climate, making sure that the campus climate is open for all different types of students, all different sets of ideas, things like that so we truly have an intellectually diverse campus and making sure that the environment facilitates that sort of behavior and conversation. And just keeping administration accountable, to make sure that they’re acting in an appropriate manner and doing things with the benefit of the students in mind.
