New Student Org: The Minority Association of Pre-Med Students

The Minority Association of Pre-Med Students at Eastern Michigan University (MAPS) helps students when it comes to the grueling work needed to succeed in the health field.

“Most freshman end up dropping out of courses because they’re hard. We are here to help with that. We will be there for you and are here to let you know that it’s do-able,” organization president Daniel Uzoma Akubuke said.

MAPS provides students with all sorts of resources including tutoring, study tables, and events with experienced guest speakers in different sectors of the health field. Last semester the organization had five medical students from the University of Michigan come and talk to the group members to give them a glimpse at what could be in their futures after graduation.

MAPS is part of a larger organization called the Student National Medical Association. Different chapters, like MAPS, are able to provide opportunities that concentrate on helping students transition into future health professionals. In addition to helping students succeed through tutoring and study tables, the organization also helps with discovering new study habits, providing information and opportunities about medical school application, and students who join will also learn how to work in a way that emphasizes team work and teaches flexibility.

“You don’t have to be a minority student to join. We are just here to help everyone who needs it,” Akubuke says.

They are located in room 342G of the Student Center. Students looking to join this organization can find the portal page on EagleSync as well as connect with the group on Facebook and Instagram at ‘maps.emu’. The organization also plans on recruiting more student members with tabling events as well as posting flyers with more information around campus.

This semester MAPS has multiple events planned, including visits to  medical schools, hosting a dental assistant speaker for members, and hosting a STEM panel on March 26.

Though being a pre-med student might seem like a frightening pathway, the Minority Association of Pre-Med Students at Eastern Michigan University is here to help all sorts of students find their place and succeed in whichever area of healthcare they choose to enter in the future.
