Eastern Michigan University celebrates international students through #YouAreWelcomeHere campaign

As part of the national #YouAreWelcomeHere campaign, Eastern Michigan University installs banners on light posts up to and around campus celebrating more than 100 international students who represent more than 40 countries.

The #YouAreWelcomeHere campaign promotes a message of welcome from colleges and universities in the U.S to international students around the world. According to the campaign's website, "it is designed to affirm that our institutions are diverse, friendly safe and committed to student development." The campaign, which began in 2016, has more than 250 supporting institutions and organizations.

"This has been a very positive campaign for Eastern Michigan University, and for universities around the country," said Walter Kraft, Eastern's vice president for communications in a news release. "When we announced the video and photo shoot, we had many in our international community show up to participate -- as well as non-international faculty, staff and students who wanted to share the welcoming and diverse environment of our campus.

In total, EMU is home to almost 1,000 international students from more than 80 countries.

According to a news release: Eastern Michigan updates the light posts banners annually. Last year's campaign featured students from The Honors College. Previous years have featured faculty, alumni, student residence hall advisors, and graduate students and programs.

Eastern Michigan University opens Amazon pickup location in Student Center

Eastern Michigan University is the first Michigan college to partner with Amazon, offering students, faculty and staff an Amazon pickup location on campus.

The newly designed location -- complete with modern technology and user-friendly interfaces -- will be adjacent to the EMU bookstore in the Student Center, utilizing a portion (approximately 3,250 sq. ft.) of the current space allocated to the bookstore.

“This is an exciting project that will further enhance the Eastern Michigan campus and our services to students, faculty and staff,” said Chief Financial Officer, Michael Valdes in a news release. “Having one of the world’s most recognized and popular brands on our campus, while offering a valuable and helpful service to our campus community, is a win-win for everyone involved.”

Amazon Prime and Prime Student members also will receive expedited shipping benefits, including free same-day or free one-day pickup on millions of items when shipped to the pickup location.

“We’re excited to offer the greater Eastern Michigan University community a convenient location to pick up and return Amazon orders,” said Ripley MacDonald, director of student programs, Amazon in a news release. “From everyday essentials to technology, we’re thrilled to be able to bring the convenience of shopping on Amazon here to Ypsilanti.”

Several universities across the nation have collaborated with Amazon including: Purdue University; University of Massachusetts Amherst; University of California, Berkeley; University of Pennsylvania and University of Texas at Austin.

Estimated completion for the pickup location is Fall 2017.
