Eagles top MSU at home, 4-3

The Eastern Michigan baseball won a close game over Michigan State University on Tuesday, April 4. The Eagles topped the Spartans by a score of 4-3 at Oestrike Stadium in Ypsilanti.

The Spartans were held in check by a strong pitching performance from junior Justin McMurtrey, who scattered four hits over four scoreless innings while striking one on 62 pitches.

The Eagles scored one in the third inning off of an rbi single from senior Jeremy Stidham, and another run in the fourth inning off of a single from senior Marquise Gill, making the score 2-0 in favor of the Eagles. The Spartans answered back in the fifth inning, scoring a pair of runs and evening up the score at 2-2.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Eagles scored one off of a solo home run from senior Mike Mioduszewski, jumping ahead on the scoreboard. In the bottom of the eighth inning, Eastern Michigan scored another off of a bases loaded walk drawn by senior Jordan Peterson, making the score 4-2 in favor of the Eagles.

Senior Matthew Beaton came on to pitch in the top of the eighth after freshman James Harness, who threw three innings in relief. Matthew Beaton who threw two innings, locked down the save in the top of the ninth inning, holding off a late push by the Spartans, to secure the win for the Eagles.

“We played really well” said left fielder Mike Mioduszewski. “Obviously every game we have a couple mistakes, but as a whole, I think we played a really well played baseball game.”

The Eagles, who have won four of their last five games, will next head out to Oxford, Ohio, to begin a three game series against Miami University. Game 1 will take place at 6pm on Friday, April 7.
