The Eastern Michigan baseball team topped Ohio University 8-2 at home on Friday, April 14 at Oestrike Stadium. For the Eagles, this becomes their seventh win in their last nine games.
Eastern Michigan bats came alive on Friday night, as they scored 8 runs against their MAC foe, the Ohio Bobcats. In the bottom of the second inning, third baseman Nick Jones singled in a pair of runs to put the Eagles in front, 2-0. In the fourth inning, outfielder Drake Lubin singled in two more runs, making the score 4-0 in favor of the Eagles. Then in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Eagles got a three-run home run off of the bat of catcher Jeremy Stidham, making the score 7-0.
Ohio's bats her held relatively quiet on the other hand. Ohio University did not score their first run until the top of the fifth inning, when they plated one run off of a wild pitch. The Bobcats scored one more in the sixth inning off of a passed ball.
The Eagles got a tremendous start from starting pitcher Sam Delaplane, as he threw a complete game. Delaplane held Ohio University to just two runs, only one being earned. Delaplane struck out 12 batters without allowing a walk on 115 pitched over nine strong innings, earning himself a win.
“It felt good” said Delaplane. “I had everything working for me. I was working ahead in counts, I only had one 3 ball count. My fastball command was huge, I’ve been struggling with that all year and i had that today. I think that was a big reason why I had success.”
The Eagles went on to score another run in the bottom of the fifth inning, as second baseman Max Scheuman singled in the eight run of the night for Eastern Michigan. The Eagles would go on to win by a score of 8-2.
The Eagles will play games two and three of this three game series against Ohio University on Saturday, April 15 at 3pm and Sunday April 16 at 1pm. Both games will be held at Oestrike Stadium.
