You Beautiful Black Woman held free STD testing for students here at Eastern Michigan University Jan. 9.
Between the hours of 1-3:30 p.m., students stopped by just to check out different information that was on the table that YBBW was giving out such as condoms and pamphlets about STDs and HIV.
After students finished getting tested, they were able to attend the informational event between 4-6 p.m.
There were at least six students who decided to get tested for STDs.
“There are many people who are sexually active that don’t know that they have any sexual disease,” said Maxine McLeish who is a member of YBBW.
Shanell Leonard, who is a member of YBBW, spoke to students about HIV and AIDs. She talked about how HIV is transmitted into your body, the definition of HIV, and how people can and cannot get HIV from another active sexual partner.
“The purpose of having this event was to bring the community together to get tested and knowing the importance of sexual disease,” said Leonard.
YBBW will be having another free testing event for students on Feb. 9. If students want to get tested for any other sexual disease they could go to Washtenaw County Public Health which is located on 555 Towner St.
Washtenaw County Public can also be reached at (734) 544-6840 to discuss your questions and concerns about HIV and STDs.
