Volleyball finishes 1-1 on MAC opening weekend

The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team (6-9) took on a pair of Mid-American Conference opponents on the road this weekend.

To kick off the set on Friday, the Eagles headed down to Ohio for a matchup with the Toledo Rockets (8-6). The Rockets came into the matchup with a 7-5 out of conference record, which was two games better than EMU. Despite being behind in record when entering the match the Eagles were able to take the match in five sets.

Even after dropping the first and fourth sets the Eagles were able to muster past the rockets behind a strong offensive performance by junior Samantha Falco, who lead the way by delivering 11 kills throughout the match. She did not do it alone with 10 kills coming from sophomore Jordan Smith and eight kills coming from senior Devon Murray and junior Kelly Ferguson.

The Eagles did not have long to bask in the glory of their in-conference victory over Toledo, with Ball State (6-10) on the schedule for Saturday evening. The Eagles would travel to Muncie, Indiana for another MACtion packed, 7pm volleyball matchup. This match, similar to the first, would go all five sets however the Eagles would find themselves on the losing side in this one.

Kelly Ferguson continued to demonstrate her offensive strength, leading the way for the Eagles with 12 kills giving her 20 through the first two in-conference games. Freshman Riley Taylor displayed her ability to assist on the volleyball court tallying up a staggering total of 32 for the match. Despite the great individual performances the Eagles could not pull it out in the final set versus the Cardinals losing 15-11.

The Eagles finish the weekend with a 1-1 in-conference record and now turn towards the next week to prepare for a matchup with in-state and in-conference opponent Western Michigan. The match is set to kick off at 7 in the Convocation Center on Friday, Sept. 30.
