The graduate's guide to spring '16 commencement

The application, the cap, the gown, the tassel, the tickets… with classes, work and a little bit of senioritis how are we suppose to know when and how all of this stuff needs to be done?

April has arrived, which means this is the month that many of us will be bidding our farewells to Eastern Michigan University. As exciting as this time may be, it is very important to be prepared and have everything you need ahead of time. Also, if your graduating next semester, this is an ideal time to start figuring this stuff out as well.

The very first step is meeting with an advisor to make sure you have met all of your requirements. Meet with faculty advisors in your major and if you are an honors student, then you should also meet an advisor in The Honors College.

Once you and your advisor are pretty confident that you have completed everything you need, then you have to apply to graduate. You do this through you’re my.emich.edu account under the student tab. You will be charged a fee of $100 per application. This can be charged to you eBill and paid later, however you must pay off your student bill before you graduate.

Once that is taken care of, you can start preparing for the actual graduation. A good resource to use is emich.edu/commencement. There you can get all of the details for the upcoming commencement ceremony.

Your cap and gown can be purchased at the EMU Campus Bookstore. If you ordered it in March or if you do it at the Grad Fair in April then you can receive a discounted price. For questions about regalia, contact 734-483-2850.

The Grad Fair will be held in the Student Center Bookstore on April 11-12 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. At the fair seniors will be able to record a video message for graduation, get information about the Alumni Association, win prizes, buy discounted alumni gear, create and order a class ring and fill out a free application for graduate school at EMU.

Another big concern that graduates may have is tickets. Every student may get up to six free tickets for graduation. They are available for pickup April 11-19 and they can be picked up from the Convocation Center, Quirk Theatre or the Student Center. You must have a photo I.D. to pick up your tickets and you must be on the approved list of graduates.

Beginning on April 20 and subject to availability, you may purchase up to four additional tickets for $5 each with a limit of two per day.

Spring commencement will be held at the EMU Convocation Center on Sunday, April 24. The College of Arts and Sciences and College of Technology ceremony will be at 9:30 a.m. and the College of Business, College of Education and College of Health and Human Services ceremony will be at 2 p.m.

Make sure that you and your guests arrive very early to ensure parking ad seating availability because everything is first come first serve. Congratulations to the class of 2016.
