Eagles break school record for third consecutive meet

For the third consecutive meet, the Eastern Michigan gymnastics team broke the school record for meet score scoring a 196.600 last night in a tri-meet against Bowling Green State University and Southeast Missouri State University in Bowling Green, Ohio.

The Eagles (11-2, 3-0 MAC) saw career highs in both the overall meet score and the team beam score as well as seven individual Eagles breaking a career high.

"I'm obviously thrilled and extremely proud of the team," EMU coach Jay Santos said. "To be able to show up and perform how they did after last weekend is simply awesome. They are competing with great confidence right now and it is really showing in their approach and how they are taking care of the details."

The Eagles started the night off on the uneven bars and sophomores Catie Conrad and Kendall Valentin scored a 9.85. Redshirt sophomore Lacey Rubin contributed a 9.825.

The Eagles then moved over to the balance beam and broke the program record with a team score of 49.275. Three Eagles scored career highs on the event including Rubin, freshman Megan Hultgren and junior Natalie Gervais. Gervais scored the highest individual score of the evening with a 9.925.

“Nat’s gorgeous on beam,” Santos said “The biggest thing with Nat is confidence issues but when she is on, she is amazing and obviously she was dead on today.”

Moving into the third event, the Eagles were on floor and saw four career highs with Conrad, sophomore Megan Marino, junior Sydney McEachern and senior Kimberly Ebeyer. Ebeyer, McEachern and sophomore Rachel Slocum all scored a 9.875.

The Eagles were on vault to finish the night and continued their strong night with a team score of 49.150. Kendall Valentin was the highlight of the event scoring a career high 9.9.

"It was also great to see that the team responded well to some adversity," Santos said. "We had a fall on both beam and floor, but the other five girls were able to focus and hit great routines. I'm very proud of how the team kept their focus and had high energy all through the meet."

Looking Forward:

The Eagles return to the Convocation Center on Friday to take on the Western Michigan University Broncos. The meet is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m.
