Police Blotter, Jan. 18

Thursday, Jan. 14, 2016.

The Department of Public Safety assisted the Ypsilanti Police Department with an assault and battery call at 1:02 a.m. This was on LeForge Rd. Because this is a YPD case, DPS did not have any further comment.

The Department of Public Safety also assisted YPD during a retail fraud call, on Cross Street, at 1:22 a.m. Because this is a YPD case, DPS didn't have any further comment.

At 5:35 p.m., an EMU student approached a campus security guard to report that they were the victim of sexual assault last summer. According to DPS, this happened during an unspecified study abroad trip. The student did not want to contact DPS, but campus security informed them of the case. DPS said that they do not have enough details to conduct an investigation. However, DPS did say that they have made unsuccessful attempts to contact the victim and Eastern Michigan University's Title IX office will be handling the case further.

DPS pulled over a car near the corner of Roosevelt and Washtenaw for a traffic violation at 6:47 p.m. Officers could smell marijuana. They searched the car and found marijuana and the synthetic drug K2. The driver, who was not an EMU student, was cited for paraphernalia and driving with a suspended license.

DPS pulled over a car between Michigan and Washtenaw Avenues, by the College of Business, for driving without their headlights on. This was at 10:08 p.m. The officer could see open alcohol in the car. The passenger gave a false name to officers. The driver failed a field sobriety test and was arrested. Neither of the two were EMU students.

Friday, Jan. 15, 2016.

A driver waved down an EMU police car at 7:08 p.m. Tuesday, to tell them that someone had hit their car and driven off. DPS identified the car that had fled the scene, pulled it over, and issued them a citation for leaving the scene of an accident. DPS says neither of the two cars involved was driven by EMU students.

Saturday, Jan. 16, 2016.

DPS was called to Walton, at 12:16 a.m. because of loud music coming from a dorm room. Officers found three underage students drinking alcohol. This has been handed off to Student Conduct.

Housing reported that someone had broken one of the glass boxes that holds fire extinguishers in Buell, but hadn't stolen the fire extinguisher. There are no suspects, or cameras in that area. Housing believes this happened sometime between 1:00 a.m. and 3:30 a.m.

A student from Brown Hall called DPS at 10:12 p.m. after receiving a threat via phone. The student recently broke up with someone on campus and felt threatened by communications between them. A DPS representative said they believe there is no imminent threat to the students’ safety.

Sunday, Jan. 17, 2016.

Housing called DPS at 9:15 p.m. after a fight between two roommates in Hill could be heard outside of their room. DPS determined that this was an argument, and no assault had actually occurred. Housing is working on splitting up the roommates.
