Eastern Michigan University’s Muslim Student Association will be holding Faces of Hope to raise money for Relay for Life from 5-8:30 p.m. Thursday in the Student Center Room 310A.
The event will feature guest speakers, cancer survivor stories and an opportunity for attendees to share their own stories. Attendees will also learn about the role the American Cancer Society plays in the fight against cancer and to learn about the research projects it funds.
All of the collected money will be donated to the ACS through Relay for Life.
Halimah Al-Qadi, a post-master’s student in educational leadership and the MSA Relay for Life Team Captain organized and will be presenting at the event. She said the point of the event is to create awareness of cancer and the impact it has on people’s lives.
“By attending this event, students will learn that cancer is an equal-opportunity disease that comes in many forms and varying levels of virulence, that affects all of us in some way or another and that the hope for a cure is very real,” she said.
Faces of Hope is MSA’s Relay for Life kickoff fundraiser, “No Shave November/Band and Understand.” The event is LBC approved. The MSA team will sponsor an awareness raising and fundraising event every month until EMU’s Relay for Life, April 15, 2015.
“Keep your eyes out for fun, community-building and thought-provoking events to raise awareness and money for the fight against cancer,” Al-Qadi said.
Al-Qadi said the mission of MSA is to spread awareness of Islam on EMU’s campus and to create a welcoming environment for Muslims at EMU. Weekly meetings take place at 6:15 p.m. every Wednesday in the Student Center Kiva Room. The organization also holds a weekly Friday Prayer gathering in the Student Center Room 350.
