CAPS holds weekly mindfulness workshop

Eastern Michigan University’s Counseling and Psychological Services program holds a mindfulness class from 12:10 to 12:50 p.m. every Monday in Snow 313.

The drop-in class was developed last year. It was so successful that three CAPS staff members decided to continue holding the class this year.

The facilitators, Jillian Carey, Rose Wilson and Jake Neinhuis have all had special training in mindfulness and meditation.

The class offers varied exercises each week such as relaxation, guided meditation, self-scanning and instructions on applying mindfulness in an everyday routine. The staffers are providing a safe place for students to become more in touch with their feelings for a more self-aware and productive life.

“This class involves meditation but is not solely revolved around it,” Neinhuis said. “Mindfulness is the practice of being aware of one's in-the-moment experience. For example, as I sit writing this response I am aware that I feel energy [and] excitement for the coming day. Most of us go through our day without acknowledging our present mood. Sometimes we are too busy or our current feelings are uncomfortable.”

He said he believes this group is good for college students specifically for the reason that college puts students under a lot of stress and it is easy for students to lose sight of their present experience. Neinhuis feels that this class can help students get a better understanding of their present feelings.

“I think it’s a cool concept,” junior criminal justice major Kristin Klavon said. “ I’m sure a lot of people I know would go if they knew about it. I would.”

Another student, Rachel Foreman, a junior in teaching, said, “I have heard of that class. I wasn’t sure what it was all about though so I never went. Maybe I will now.”

This mindfulness group can benefit anyone who goes, whether it’s once or repeatedly. Studies show meditation is a great way to relieve anxiety.
