Delta Tau Delta holds fundraiser for Type 1 diabetes research

Delta Tau Delta raised $1166.50 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, which funds Type 1 diabetes research. The fundraiser took place Tuesday afternoon at 722 Lowell St.

Attendees could pay $2, $5 or $10 to throw one, three or 12 eggs, respectively, at members of the fraternity.

Dalton Brosnan, Delta Tau Delta’s vice president, said the fraternity has grown very close with the JDRF.

“[W]e love what they stand for and how many lives they impact,” Brosnan said. “Being able to meet kids with type 1 diabetes and knowing that we are making them and their families happy in turn makes us happy. It is our obligation to give back to those in need.”

The idea for the event came from the Egg Crack Challenge, started by Will Hauver, who died this past February of Type 1 diabetes at 22-years old.

The challenge, carried on by friends of Hauver, became a national movement.

Delta Tau Delta’s philanthropy chair, Nathan Pyle, developed a spin on the challenge for this fundraiser.

“We saw [the Egg Crack Challenge] and we said wanted to do something with it,” Pyle said. “We thought that people would come out more if they had the ability to throw the eggs at us.”

He said they started the event last year and raised about $350.

Kalandria Robinson, a member of the Alpha Xi Delta sorority, went to support the fraternity.

“I love [this event] because it’s fun, it’s different and it keeps things creative and mixes things up,” Robinson said.
