Melody A. Werner has been appointed to the newly established Title IX Coordinator position. She will begin June 19.
In a campus-wide email Calvin Phillips, associate vice president of student affairs at EMU, said Werner will “develop initiatives, deliver education and training, and coordinate awareness of gender equity and sex discrimination across the University.”
She will also “oversee and coordinate investigations, monitor the campus climate, identify opportunities for improvement, and ensure that the University has adequate grievance procedures for resolving complaints under Title IX,” according to the email.
The position was established in fall 2014. A national search was conducted during the 2014-15 academic year by the Title IX Coordinator search committee and search support, chaired by University Ombuds Chiara Hensley.
According to the Title IX Compliance at Eastern Michigan page on the EMU website, it is against university policy to discriminate on the basis of “non-merit reasons” including race, sex, religion and age.
Werner worked at EMU from 1996-2014 as the Senior Associate Athletics Director/Senior Woman Administrator, Interim Athletics Director and the University Title IX Deputy. She earned a doctorate in education at EMU.
