Legally Blonde comes to EMU

The house lights went down, the rustling of the audience quieted and the music began as “Legally Blonde” opened on Friday at the Quirk Theatre. Catchy songs such as “Omigod You Guys,” “Bend and Snap” and “Whipped into Shape” captivated audiences while the slower “Legally Blonde” brought out the emotions of the crowd.

“Legally Blonde,” based on the movie and book by the same name, is the story of Elle Woods, a recent college graduate who applies to Harvard Law School. She originally intends to follow her ex-boyfriend, Warner, there and win him back, but soon finds new opportunities and challenges at the school.

“I think the audience will love the energy of the show, how fun it is and all the pink!” said Ginny Reiche, the assistant stage manager. The set and floor of the stage are painted primarily pink.

Eastern Michigan University’s version of “Legally Blonde” has a cast of 24 people, two dogs and is directed by Phil Simmons. Kristin McSweeney stars Elle Woods and brings the hopeful lawyer to life in her bright pink skirt suits.

“My favorite part of the show was the satisfaction of seeing it all finally come together and seeing the things we've worked on so hard actually work,” said Assistant Costume Designer Tori Clayton. Clayton is a sophomore at Eastern.

With auditions starting in January, preparations for the musical have been going on for a long time.

“The tech crews on this show have been amazing. They have all been a phenomenal help backstage and kept the show running. It couldn't have been done without them,” said Reiche.

A full orchestra pit is visible for this musical with 11 musicians providing the music for the show. They are directed by R. Mackenzie Lewis.

“The songs were catchy and fun,” said Alex Ardigo, a senior at Kettering University. “It was very energetic. The Omigod part definitely spoke to me.” This was Ardigo’s first show at Eastern.

“Everyone has done such an amazing job; seeing how it all came together just in the last week was magical,” Clayton said.

The first two showings of “Legally Blonde” sold out, and tickets are going fast for the rest of the run.

“Opening night went perfectly,” Reiche said after a standing ovation.

“Legally Blonde” will be performed again on April 16, 17 and 18 at 7 p.m. and on Sunday, April 19, at 2 p.m. in the Quirk Theatre. Tickets can be bought at the EMU box office, online or at the door.
