While EMU students took last week off, the men’s basketball team continued to work, but fell short by going 1-2 during break.
The Eagles began the mid-winter break with a 73-65 victory Feb. 21, on the road at Northern Illinois. Mike Talley scored a career high 25 points while Karrington Ward followed with 21 points. Both players also played all 40 minutes in the contest to help complete the season sweep over the Huskies.
After sweeping NIU, the Eagles couldn’t avoid being swept in the season series against Central Michigan, falling to the Chippewas Feb. 24, 72-56.
The same issues that haunted EMU from the first matchup in January, allowing the three-point shots. The Chippewas hit 16 three-pointers, with seven from John Simons and six from Josh Kozinski.
Talley and Ward led EMU in scoring in this game as well with 16 points from Talley and 14 from Ward.
Closing out the slate of spring break games was another rematch, this time on the road at Western Michigan Saturday. Raven Lee’s 26 points weren’t enough for the Eagles as EMU fell to the Broncos 80-72.
The Eagles found themselves in foul trouble in the game as the Broncos attempted 34 free throws and converting on 29 of them to lead WMU to the win.
EMU now with the three games in the books are currently 17-12 on the season and fall to 6-10 in MAC play. Two regular season games remain for the Eagles, on the road Wednesday at Ball State before finishing the season at home against Toledo.
