The Eastern Michigan University organization I Am P.I.N.K. will be hosting its first P.I.N.K. Pageant on Tuesday, March 3 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. in Ballroom A of the Student Center.
“The P.I.N.K. Pageant, unlike normal pageants, is not judged based on appearances,” said Liz Lang, an I Am P.I.N.K. member. “The judges won’t be judging you based on what you look like or what you are wearing, but instead on your involvement on and off campus and the kind of impact you make on your community.”
The winner of the pageant will be what the judges consider a young woman on campus that resembles what a P.I.N.K. lifestyle is. This entails making a decision to change your lifestyle for the better and being a positive role model for young women to look up to.
The pageant winner will be awarded a $300 scholarship.
“This is not just an event for the participants involved in it, but we are sending a message to the campus and the community that looks are not everything, and it is important to be confident in who you are and to embrace your greatest attributes and flaws,” said Lang.
The categories for the pageant are the introduction of the contestants, the “Letter To My Younger Self” where each young lady will read the letters that they wrote to their younger self about anything that they would of done differently or what they did great. The final one will be a talent show, which can be any talent that the contestants feel comfortable doing.
Each pageant contestant will receive a gift and a title. I am P.I.N.K. will have giveaways during the pageant in order to have fun with the crowd and there will be some acts during the pageant as well.
“I think that within society we have so many dominant male leaders and not enough strong women to look up to for positive inspiration and that is what I Am P.I.N.K. is about,” said Lang.
The organization is accepting donations at gofund.me/6swp88 and proceeds will go towards the scholarship grand prize.
“I decided to get involved with I Am P.I.N.K. because of the purpose to mentor and uplift young woman on campus as well as off,” said Maxine McLeish, an I Am P.I.N.K. public relations chair.
If a student is interested in joining I Am P.I.N.K., they can follow their Instagram page @iampinkorg and look for informational posts, or email them at pinkatemu@gmail.com expressing their interest. The president will respond with more information to join.
“There is a lot of young girls who need that one person who can help them out or even listen to and guide them in the right direction,” said McLeish. “All of us in I Am P.I.N.K has our own story, so we feel that it is important to make sure we give back in any way possible.”
