The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team has been busy over break getting ready for the upcoming season. The 2015 season starts at the Convocation Center Friday, and the team’s first MAC meet is Jan. 17.
Over break, the ladies were focused on preparing to take down Temple University, who they go up against Friday. After losing their exhibition match against University of Michigan, they are hoping to start off the new year with a win. Their next meet will take them to Mt. Pleasant to take on the Chippewas for their first MAC meet of the season.
Eastern’s gymnastics team is predicted to finish fifth in the conference this year. Last year, Eastern fulfilled the same prediction. The team hopes not to have the same fate this year under new head coach Jay Santos.
This year, the Eagles will call the Convocation Center their home. There, they will go up against MAC teams Bowling Green University, Kent State and Ball State along with Temple University and University of Illinois - Chicago. Other MAC match ups the Eagles will face this year are against Central Michigan University, Western Michigan University and Northern Illinois University.
Besides the season meets, the gymnastics team is looking ahead to three tournaments this year. Its first tournament for the 2015 season is the Michigan/Illinois Challenge and takes place Jan. 31 in Normal, III. The Eagles will go up against the Illinois State Cardinals and Central Michigan University Chippewas. The second tournament takes place in Lansing against Michigan State and Arizona University on March 6. Their final competition is the MAC Championship on March 21 in Kent, Ohio.
The gymnastics team has been working hard since its exhibition loss on Dec. 7.
