Everett L. Marshall Building was evacuated around 10:15 a.m. Wednesday in response to a strong smell of gasoline inside. The building reopened around 11:30 a.m. and classes resumed at 2 p.m.
The gasoline smell was linked to a malfunction in one of the building’s exterior emergency generators, EMU’s executive director of media relations Geoff Larcom said.
There are no reports of illness or injuries.
“Anytime there’s a suspicious smell like this, we have to evacuate the building,” he said.
Senior apparel merchandising major Shannon Peake was in Marshall when the building was evacuated, and said the gasoline smell was very strong.
“It smelled like straight up gas,” she said.
The Ypsilanti Fire Department and EMU’s Department of Public safety were on the scene Wednesday morning, working to remedy the generator malfunction in order to reopen the building.
