Flu shots: More than a shot in the arm

The flu season could arrive in the Michigan as early as this month.

Eastern Michigan University’s Health Services will offer students, faculty and members of the community the opportunity to get vaccinated throughout October and November at the Snow Health Center and several satellite clinics.

The University says it can take up to two weeks for the flu shot to become effective, and the worst side effect of the shot is a sore arm.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that between 5 percent and 20 percent of Americans will suffer from the contagious respiratory illness each year.

There are several preventive precautions people can take to protect themselves – starting with getting a flu vaccination.

The shot will set you back $30 without insurance. The flu shots will be given on:

  • Oct. 6, 14, 20, 28, Nov. 10 and 14 at Room 204 in the Snow Health Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Oct. 7 at EMU’s Children’s Institute, in the Fletcher Building, from 4 to 6:30 p.m.
  • Oct. 16, at the College of Business from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
  • Oct. 31, at the Student Center from noon to 4 p.m.

In addition to getting the flu shot, The CDC recommends that Americans practice these six good health habits:

  • Avoid close contact with those who are sick
  • Stay home when you’re sick
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing
  • Wash your hands often
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces at home, work or school, especially when someone is ill.
