On Thursday, the American Red Cross and the International Business Student Association of Eastern Michigan University will be sponsoring a charity dine and donate event at the Tower Inn Café, Bar and Grill located on 701 W. Cross St. Ypsilanti, Mich.
The charity event is being held to raise funds for Typhoon Haiyan relief. According to National Public Radio, the typhoon’s speeds clocked in at 147 mph when it struck the Philippines on Nov. 8, 2013.
It was one of the strongest storms ever recorded at landfall. I was reported that more than 6,000 people were killed in the storm, and 2,000 more are still missing. Millions of others were displaced when their homes were destroyed or washed away.
Brock Foster, former president of the IBSA, said the charity was important to the IBSA because one of its member’s has family in the Philippines.
“A lot of the aid is still just trickling in,” Foster said. “Being an international business organization we wanted to see where we could help.”
Tower Inn has agreed to donate 20 percent of all food bills from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. to the American Red Cross for Typhoon Haiyan relief.
“It all goes straight to the Red Cross,” Foster said. “We have also been doing lobby tables at the Student Center and the College of Business to get extra donations.”
Foster said that any relief helps but the IBSA hopes to raise at least $500 from Thursday’s charity event.
