Fashionality is more than just a fashion

Everyone hears of the excitement of Fashion Week in major cities like New York, Paris and Milan. Eastern Michigan University students had a taste of their own Fashion Week leading up to the big fashion show “La Dolce Vita, The Sweet Life” on Oct. 10.

On Monday, Oct. 7, an Introduction to Fashion Week was held in the Student Center from 12-4 p.m. to build anticipation and excitement for the upcoming events.

Fashion Week was hosted by the EMU student organization Fashionality. During the Fashion Week Intro, members handed out flyers and encouraged students to enter raffles where they had the opportunity to win Detroit Pistons tickets, VIP tickets to the fashion show and gift cards. Winners were announced the night of the Miss Fashionality Pageant on Oct. 9.

“We are all about the hustle and bustle to get people ready for real life,” said Fashionality’s stylist coordinator and runway coach, Jamisha Kearney.

Kearney says that the core of their events is about more than just fashion. The organization participates in many community service projects throughout the year and works to get sponsors and raise money to put on their events.

“It’s also about giving back to our community,” said Kearney. Every year they take proceeds from their fashion show at the closing of Fashion Week and donate it to a charity of their choice. This year’s donations will be going to the American Heart Association.

“The fashion show is what I’m most excited for,” said Alonte Barefield, a model for this year’s show. Barefield’s expectation is that it will be full of energy and “big and beautiful.”

Fashionality encourages not only students who want a career in fashion to get involved, but those who are involved in public relations, marketing, business and journalism to participate in the development and promotion for visibility.

“Fashion is only 50 to 60 percent of what we are,” said Kearney.

If you are interested in getting involved with Fashionality, they will beholding their interview process in January 2014.
