EMU student assaulted overnight

Another Eastern Michigan University student was assaulted in the area around Leforge Ave. just before 8 p.m. yesterday night, the third such incident in the Leforge area in recent days and the fourth in the immediate area surrounding campus – all victimizing EMU students.

According to a timely warning issued by the university, an EMU student was assaulted at his apartment at University Green, the same apartment complex where EMU student-athlete Demarius Reed was killed, when he answered a knock on his door. Upon answering the door, he was struck in the face by a man holding a handgun.

The victim fought with the man in the hallway. During the fight, the release stated, an unknown number of additional subjects kicked in the front window of the apartment. The victim went back into the apartment to check on his roommate and noticed the suspects fleeing the scene.

The victim was able to describe one of the suspects as being an African-American male, around 20 years of age with light complexion, short hair and approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall. The subject was wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and jeans.

The victim suffered no major injuries and did not seek medical attention, according to the release.

The Ypsilanti Police Department is investigating the case.

The Department of Public Safety would like to remind the University Community to:

• Walk with friends or coworkers when possible.

• Program the number for EMU Police (734-487-1222) into your cell phone.
