On Sunday, Eastern Michigan University women’s tennis pair of senior Nino Mebuke and sophomore Klara Supejova took the doubles title at the Gopher Invitational hosted by the University of Minnesota.
The duo took out No. 28-ranked senior Ruth Seaborne and junior Morven McCulloch from the University of Iowa (9-7) to capture the Gold Flight Championship.
“Nino and Klara played a great match to win the title,” EMU head coach Ryan Ray said. “They are preparing for the pre-qualifying round of the ITA All-American National Championships this weekend at UCLA, and hope this gives them some momentum going into the weekend.”
In singles competition, senior Diana Davitala defeated University of Northern Iowa junior Erica Medlin in straight sets (6-4, 6-1) for a third-place finish in the “Maroon” Flight Singles.
In the “Maroon” Flight Singles, junior Daphne Fredericks took third place by defeating sophomore Kelsey Frechette in consecutive sets (6-3, 7-5).
“We had a solid weekend all together,” Ray said. “We finished an impressive last day without losing a set in six singles matches.
Minnesota junior Tereza Brichacova and sophomore Jessika Mozia each earned singles championship titles.
Brichacova earned the “M” Flight in a long match over Iowa State University’s Ksenia Pronina (6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (5)). Mozia defeated fellow teammate junior Aria Lambert (6-3, 6-0).
Looking Ahead:
The Eagles will look to build momentum from the opener as most of team will travel to Bloomington, Ind., for the Indiana Invitational, while Mebuke and Supejova will compete at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Women’s All-American National Championships in Pacific Palisades, Ca. from Sept. 28-Oct. 6.
“Klara and Nino will look to continue their success at UCLA this weekend,” Ray said. “As for the rest of the team, we hope to find steady improvement in their play at the Hoosier Classic.”
