The Eastern Echo

Letter To the Editor

Dear Eastern Echo,

I am extremely upset and offended by the article titled, “Students for Life Informs about Planned Parenthood,” as the title in and of itself seems contradictory. My main concern lies in the fact Students for Life was noticed for “educating people on the misconceptions of what Planned Parenthood does.” In reality, Students for Life and the Planned Parenthood Project were the ones providing misinformation and failing to cite where their alleged facts came from.

The “statistic” I’d like to shed some light on is the one stating 92 percent of Planned Parenthood’s services are abortions. 97 percent of Planned Parenthood’s services in Michigan are focused on preventative healthcare that save lives and money. 1 in 5 women will utilize Planned Parenthood’s services in her lifetime, and by calling it the “Walmart of abortions” as was done in the article completely falsifies and slanders what Planned Parenthood stands for.

Students for Choice were standing with Planned Parenthood on Tuesday, and would have appreciated the chance to let the student body hear our voices as well. The statistics being presented by both sides are starkly different, and it gravely disappoints me that students on our campus are receiving information, which is completely fabricated, and are being directed to “resources” which are inherently anti-choice.

Planned Parenthood is pro-woman, and works to improve the sexual health and well being of individuals and families everywhere. I encourage my fellow students to visit plannedparenthood.org for more information on the numbers I provided, and to see the other great services Planned Parenthood offers.

Sincerely,

Oona Friedland
President, Students for Choice
