Regents decide to extend Susan Martin’s contract

Eastern Michigan University’s Board of Regents held a special meeting Friday to share the decision to extend EMU President Susan Martin’s contract until July 7, 2015.

Martin is the first female president in the university’s 160-year history.

“I am excited and thrilled,” Martin said of her contract extension as president. “It’s been a wonderful gift to serve Eastern. I love the university and its students. We’re at a point now with an able team that I think we can do a lot together to continue to lift the university up. We have a lot more facilities—living and learning facilities, try to figure out how to get money to renovate.”

Martin also said, “We have more faculty to hire and continue to struggle to keep the institution affordable for students, many of whom work through school. We want to provide an excellent education, and we’re doing that, bringing a record number of students in, and a record number of graduates out. We want to work together to make this a great university and a place where we know our students are well-served, get their degree in a timely manner, live in Michigan and have a productive life.”
