Eastern Michigan University director of bands, Mary Schneider, to be inducted into American Bandmasters Association—

Mary Schneider, associate professor of music and director of bands at EMU will be inducted into the American Bandmasters Association during the organization’s annual convention taking place March 6-8, 2014 in Montgomery, Ala.

Schneider is a conductor for EMU’s Wind Symphony. She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in music and conducting education and also directs the areas of the university’s band program.

EMU, Temple Israel offer college-level courses to high school students—

EMU and Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, Mich. are expanding their program for high school students interested in college-level Jewish Studies courses.

The fall 2013 semester will offer three courses at Temple Israel including; Modern Hebrew I and Modern Hebrew III, taught by Libat Aviv and the Bible as Literature with Rabbi Joshua Bennett.

Modern Hebrew II and Modern Hebrew IV with Aviv, and Jewish-

American Literature, taught by Martin Shichtman, will be offered in the winter semester of 2014.

Chemist to speak at EMU about green chemistry—

Green chemistry’s history and its value will be discussed during the Jean Dreyfus Boissevain Lecture series at EMU, featuring speaker John Warner.

Warner is president and chief of the Warner Babcock Institute for Green Chemistry, LLC, which he founded in 2007. He has also published papers and books regarding his work in the fields of semiconductor design, biodegradable plastic, personal care products, solar energy and polymeric photoresists.

Discussions will take place on Wednesday, May 29 at 4:30 p.m. in room 156 of the Science Complex at EMU and Thursday, May 30, at 1:30 p.m. in room 154 of the Science Complex.

EMU alumni honored for career, community success during the 52nd Annual Alumni Awards—

Tom Sidlik, EMU regent from 2004-2012, and Patrick McInnis, chief executive officer of Fathead LLC, received the John W. Porter Distinguished Service Award.

The following alumni from EMU were also honored with awards during the event:

• Suzie Staley-Schlott, Outstanding Young Alumna Award. Staley-Schlott graduated from EMU’s communication, media and theatre arts program. She is the youth mentorship program director for the Henry Ford Museum.

• John Rutherford, Alumnus Achievement Award. Rutherford earned a master’s in communication and theatre arts at EMU.

• Kirk Profit, Distinguished Alumnus Award. Profit graduated from EMU with a bachelor’s in philosophy and earned a law degree from the University of Detroit.

• Annmarie Simonson, Distinguished Alumna Award. Simonson began her college career at Indiana Wesleyan University and team transferred to EMU in 1979 to join the forensics team.

• Jim Streeter, Distinguished Alumnus Award. Streeter attended school at EMU in 1966. He worked as the sports editor for The Eastern Echo, graduating in 1973 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education with journalism minor.
