Heart Walk sets new monetary goal

The 2013 Washtenaw County Heart Walk will take place Sunday, May 19. The start location will be at Washtenaw Community College, located at 4800 E. Huron River Drive in Ann Arbor.

The gates open at 8:30 a.m. and the opening ceremony will begin at 9:15 a.m. The walk will begin at 9:30 a.m. and end at 11 a. m.

There is no registration fee and walkers are eligible for a Heart Walk T-shirt once they have raised a minimum of $100.

This year’s goal is to raise $159,000. According to the website counter, $95,136 has been raised to date.

For those interested in contributing, there are a few of ways to do so. One is walking and getting pledges from friends and family. Another is by pledging to a participant and the last is by donating directly to the American Heart Association.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, heart disease kills about 600,000 people in the United States annually, accounting for 1 in 4 deaths. It is the number one cause for death for both women and men, and every year, 715,000 Americans suffer from heart attacks.
