Are your final projects getting the best of you? These Eastern Michigan University events won’t write your 14-page paper for you, but they’ll definitely take your mind off of it for a while.
Thursday, April 18
Some of history’s most famous musicians have smashed their instruments on stage, but they have the funds to go out and buy a replacement—everyday college kids don’t. For one day only, you can channel your inner rock star (and pent-up stress) and pummel a piano at the American String Teachers Association’s Piano Smash fundraiser. The event will take place outside of the Alexander Music Building from 3-6 p.m. It’s only $1 a swing and the piano is already broken beyond repair, so it’s entirely guilt-free.
Watch out, fashionistas—Fashion Avenue’s Illusion 2013 runway show will be taking place at 7 p.m. in the McKenny Union Ballroom. Tickets are $10, so don’t miss the opportunity to see the works of both students and guest designers.
The old adage says the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, but could the way to a student’s brain be through the stomach as well? If you attend Campus Life’s Snack and Study at the Student Center at 9 p.m., you can find out for yourself. Catch up on work, get some of those pesky take-home quizzes out of the way, study with friends and, of course, eat stuff.
Friday, April 19
One of the best overlooked stress relievers is absolutely free—exercise. You can take part in a group workout with EagleFIT at 5 p.m. in Room 212 of the Rec/IM. The event costs nothing and is open to any student or faculty member with access to the Rec/IM.
Music can be refreshing to the spirit, live music even more so. If you’ve never had the opportunity to see EMU’s choirs and orchestra in action, visit Pease Auditorium at 8 p.m. With pieces from Felix Mendelssohn and Claude Debussy as well as some opera selections, the event will be a real treat for your ears. Oh yeah, you’ll also earn Learning Beyond the Classroom credit.
If you missed out on the first Snack and Study, you have another chance to get your snack on at the Student Center at 9 p.m.
Saturday, April 20
It’s a bit of a drive, but if you can make it to the historic Eastern Market in Detroit at 2934 Russell St. from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., you can participate in TRUEMU Day, where alumni, faculty and current students will receive a free tote bag and discounts at certain businesses.
