The Eastern Michigan University women’s tennis team won its second consecutive meet, when it defeated the Northern Illinois University Huskies 6-1 on Saturday.
EMU evened out its Mid-American Conference record (3-3) and improved to 8-12 overall.
EMU excelled with doubles competition and won all three matches. No. 1 doubles duo junior Nino Mebuke and freshman Klara Supejova finished with a solid 8-1 against NIU’s Nelle Youel and Arantza De Le Torre.
EMU’s No. 2 pair, sophomore Ankita Bhatia and junior Mariya Toncheva, marked a close 8-7 (7-4) against Stephanie McDonald and Haley Dekkinga from NIU.
Sophomore Daphne Friedrichs and Zsofia Biro had another close doubles match at No. 3 against NIU’s Cristina Alvarez and Mary Malkin with an 8-2 score.
EMU earned many more wins with the singles competition. No. 1 singles player Supejova went to three sets against NIU’s Youel, 5-7, 6-2, 1-0 (10-8).
Mebuke also defeated her competition from the Huskies but she only went two short sets. Mebuke and Dekkinga were the first from the singles to finish their matches and went 6-1 and 6-3, respectively.
The sole EMU loss went to the No. 3 singles when NIU’s Malkin defeated EMU’s Bhatia in three sets.
The Huskies won the first set but Bhatia came back to claim the second. The final set resulted in a
win for Malkin, 6-4, 0-6, 1-0 (10-1).
The final matches were marked as EMU wins. No. 4 Friedriches went another two short sets as she defeated De La Torre 6-2, 6-2.
No. 5 Biro defeated Alvarez 6-4, 6-1 and No. 6 Toncheva defeated McDonald.
The Eagles will continue the team’s home competition at the Claudia Wasik Tennis Complex. EMU will take on the University of New York at Buffalo Bulls on Friday.
The following day, the Eagles will welcome the University of Akron Zips. Competition for both days is set to start at 1 p.m.
Those will be the final two meets until EMU heads to Muncie, Ind., April 25- 28 to compete in the MAC tournament.
