Eastern Michigan University’s Student Government held its first 2013-14 Student Body Inauguration on Tuesday.
The event took place at the Student Center, where students received the chance to observe the swearing in of newly elected student body representatives.
Matthew Norfleet, the outgoing Student Body president, addressed the crowd and introduced them to the new president-elect, Desmond Miller. Miller then took the floor and began the task of swearing in 16 representatives.
The oath taken by the representatives is as follows:
“I, [person’s name], do solemnly affirm that I will faithfully execute the duties of the office in which I have been elected [or appointed]. I will, to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the rights and interest of the student body of Eastern Michigan University.”
Miller and Nino Monea, Student Government vice-president elect, agreed that the reality of their victory has yet to sink in.
EMU senior and nursing major Jessica Potter was there to congratulate Miller and Monea. Their ticket was the one she voted for in the Student Government elections and she agreed it is discouraging that there wasn’t a big voting crowd (only 2,281 students voted in the March election).
“To see the hard work that I know that both sets of candidates put in, and not having a big turnout, is kind of disappointing,” she said. “We need to be working harder to get voters to come out and hold themselves accountable.”
