The season has already begun for the Detroit Tigers, but the day many people around town are looking forward to is Friday, which marks the home opener for the Tigers when the team takes on the New York Yankees at Comerica Park in Detroit.
A couple of organizations will be taking to parking lots Friday before the game to help out struggling Detroit Public Schools.
College Hunks Hauling Junk and Art Roads Nonprofit are seeking to bring desperately needed art supplies back into DPS classrooms.
“Last year we collected and delivered four large bins of school supplies for Art Road Nonprofit,” said Dan Ryan, owner of College Hunks Hauling Junk in a press release. “We want to fill the entire truck this year. I believe every child should have art in their life. Owning a business allows one to bring awareness to worthwhile charities, and we at College Hunks Hauling Junk are thrilled to be associated with a great group like Art Road Nonprofit.”
This endeavor is also being seen positively on Eastern Michigan University’s campus.
“I think that its great whenever a company is willing to put on a drive like this especially for the arts,” EMU senior political science major Andrew Abad said. “I feel like music and the arts are some of the most underfunded parts of education, and deserve to be as much a part of the curriculum as math and science do.”
For those who are heading to the game and want to help, the group will be set up from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the corner of John R and Madison streets, which is right down the street from the Michigan Opera Theatre and the federal courthouse. They will be accepting donations of both money and art supplies.
