I Am P.I.N.K. gets more than 80 dresses for boutique

I Am P.I.N.K. received more than 80 dress donations from, at least, 30 students for their second prom dress drive, which was created to provide prom dresses for girls who cannot afford one of their own. The event concluded on Sunday.

According to the website, P.I.N.K is a self-defined acronym for: “Positive that my past will not define my future. Introducing myself to the world. Never giving up on my dreams. Knocking on success’ door.”

I Am P.I.N.K. founder, Janae Griggs, said she believes the second prom dress drive was more successful than the first.

“This year, we did a lot more advertising,” she said. “I was featured on Fox 2 News’ morning show a few weeks ago promoting the dress drive and asking the viewers for donations.”

The organization will be holding a Prom Boutique from 1-4 p.m. next Saturday at D:hive in Detroit. Griggs said the dresses are going to be available on a first-come-first-serve basis and styles will range from short dresses with tutu skirts to homecoming dresses.

The organization received mostly red, pink and orange dresses from the second prom dress drive. Griggs said all of the unclaimed dresses will be donated to The Seventh Generation, which is a Detroit nonprofit organization that works with foster care children. She said the organization will distribute the remaining dresses to young women in need.

In addition, I Am P.I.N.K. is looking for volunteers to help with future events.

Griggs said five people have expressed interest in joining the organization, but the group would like to have at least 10 more women who are dedicated to the organizatin’s mission.
Griggs added that she believes it is important to give back to others.

“To whom much is given, much is required,” she said. “I have been blessed with so much in my life that I feel it is my job to give back to others.”
