Desmond Miller and Nino Monea are Eastern Michigan University’s new student president and vice-president elect, respectively.
Current Student Body President Matthew Norfleet read the election results at 9 p.m. Thursday after the polls closed, in the Student Government office located in Room 342 of the Student Center.
Miller and Monea had 1,360 votes, to opponents Josh Lowe and Brianna Siler’s 921.
Lowe is not a stranger to defeat. He and his former running mate, Jake Speck, lost to Norfleet and Miller in the 2012 Student Government election. However, Lowe and Siler took the loss graciously.
“I’m still proud of everything we’ve done,” Siler said. “We did a great job. I’m really glad we got to reach out to as many people as we did. You win some, you lose some. That’s all right. There’s always next year.”
Siler also said she will still be involved with Student Government in any areas where she might be needed.
Miller was pleased with the outcome and is eager to begin his term on a positive note.
“So many emotions. Excited, nervous, anxiety, but good. All good feelings. We’re ready to get to work,” he said.
Norfleet said he is proud of the student body for electing this team and believes it was the definitive choice to make.
“Both of their experience and dedication, and just out-right love for students…it’s unparalleled.”
