The Best Buddies program raised over $11,000 Sunday for its Eastern Michigan University and University of Michigan chapters through the Best Buddies Michigan Friendship Walk.
The one-mile walk took place at Gallup Park in Ann Arbor and had 280 participants.
Best Buddies is an international non-profit organization. Its goal is to establish global volunteering that creates one-on-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
According to www.firstgiving.com, the purpose of this walk was to raise awareness about disabilities, promote inclusion and raise money for both EMU’s and U of M’s Best Buddies programs.
“It is so very important for other students to be aware of Best Buddies and what we do,” Best Buddies Program Director Megan Hoorn said. “Because social inclusion is not just something for our members, or for our families or for just some people. Social inclusion is for everyone. Social inclusion means that people with disabilities can be included, active, appreciated members of society, and can participate and have equal opportunities.”
Anyone is welcome to join the Best Buddies program, and its application process will begin in September. Chapter activities and meetings are held monthly.
At the friendship walk, pizza, desserts, chips and water were provided. There was also a DJ and a talent show that included performances by several of the organization’s buddies and college buddies.
“Our program creates friendships and is an eye-opening, rewarding experience for both the college buddies as well as the buddies who are involved,” Hoorn said.
If you missed out on the friendship walk and would like a chance to see what Best Buddies is all about, you can attend their next event, the Respect Campaign. Best Buddies has teamed up with the CloseUp Theater Troupe to put on this event, which will take place April 3 from 3-5 p.m. in the Student Center.
