Student lab assistants

Students at Eastern Michigan University have been given the chance to work side-by-side with their professors on various research projects throughout the years.

A news release on the EMU website said that adjunct professor of chemistry at EMU, Jim Hoeschele, works with students to develop cancer-fighting medications that could produce more functioning treatments for the disease. The team explores metal-based compounds during their research.

According to the release, Hoeschele assisted in the development of a chemotherapeutic medication called cisplatin. The drug is used to help treat solid cancers. He also co-invented carboplatin, another drug comparable to cisplatin.

Hoeschele taught at Michigan State University for 15 years and began working at EMU in 2009.

Entrepreneurship Conference

The Eastern Michigan University Center for Entrepreneurship will present the SESI Midwest Entrepreneurship Conference at the Student Center this month.

A news release on the EMU website lists the event as taking place Feb. 8, beginning at 8:30 a.m. The event is free, but those interested must register.

According to the release, the name of the conference is, “Breaking the Chains” and seeks to help motivate people and is intended to coach future entrepreneurs to be successful in pursuing their goals.

The event is organized by the Collegiate Entrepreneurs
Organization, a student group within the EMU College of Business.

According to the release, the conference will feature many keynote speakers including Debi Scroggins, owner of Bear Claw Coffee and EMU Provost and Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs Kim Schatzel.
