V-Day doesn’t just stand for Valentine’s Day anymore. For fifteen years now, Vagina Day has been celebrated to raise awareness about violence against woman. One in three women will be raped or beaten in their lifetime, according to One Billion Rising’s website; the organization works for the prevention of violence against women.
V-Day’s 15th anniversary theme is “to walk out, dance, rise up and demand an end to this violence.” In honor of V-Day, the Eastern Michigan University Women’s Resource Center will be holding a flash mob on the first floor of the Student Center Feb. 14 at 12 p.m.
WRC Office Coordinator Lia Adamopoulos, who is also an EMU student with a double major in psychology and women’s and gender studies, said the message behind the flash mob is “standing up and saying we’re not going to stay silent about this.”
Adamopoulos said anyone can join in the flash mob and encouraged students to show their support.
The one billion rising’s webpage, OneBillionRising.org, has a video so you can learn the dance, but joining in and mimicking others around you can be just as good.
“Hopefully a lot of people will come and engage in it,” Adamopoulos said.
