Winter is half over; it’s time for spring shopping

Now that you’ve stocked up on your thick winter gear to help beat the cold, it’s about time to start considering purchases for spring. You want to display a cohesive understanding of both trend and style. I took the liberty of researching some of the hottest spring trends for ladies, so you can rush off to the mall after reading this article and get right for the season ahead.

Black and white ensembles, although not a new trend per se, will be sure to get you noticed. The classic contrast of good and evil always seems to have a certain appeal, especially when worn in unconventional fabrics or garment types. Pair a black blouse with white slacks and simple make-up for a classic Yves Saint Laurent feel during the day or night.

For the girl who is more risqué and doesn’t mind showing some skin, get ready because it’s about to be all about you. A cutout here, some sheer there, skin everywhere will be your anthem once the weather starts to break. Subtle sexiness takes form in the art of keeping your ensemble classy but giving your viewers a little leg, bust or side action. Searching “cutout dresses” in Google will give you a plethora of options to choose from.

Since we’ve transitioned to dresses, my next trend suggestion is the sporty A-line dress. Freedom is needed in your frock and not so much body-hugging sex appeal, which is why a chic transitional dress will be a wardrobe necessity this spring. The ability to pair your footwear from stilettos to Chuck Taylors with a girly dress will make you happy and a sure standout from your competition.

Another great addition to your dress and Converse combo are the statement sunnies. A colored frame is always a sure way to set everything on fire from your hair to your outfit. Cat eye sunglasses look great against a slicked back pony while colored lenses show your rebellion and style. Raid your grandmother’s closet while she isn’t looking for some true vintage-inspired statement sunglasses to complete your look.

The truly fashionably offensive diva will be sure to love this next trend spotted on the runways of Michael Kors, Tory Burch and Helmut Lang—the short suit. The traditional jacket and trouser suit is being left with the frigid cold winter months, and the snazzy leg bearing two-piece ensemble is making its way in for the spring.

Executing this trend is only suggested for the truly confident girl because being nervous will make you live bait for your hungry critics. This is a look you have to not just wear, but own. Soft pastels and engaging prints are the best choices when deciding if you want to take your style to the next level with a short suit.

Another not so dangerous but daring trend for the spring are the Bermuda shorts. Made popular in —you guessed it—Bermuda, this short sits right above the knee for a tropical/desert comfort like none other. I know a short that comes above the knee doesn’t seem that daring, but paired with a tucked, flouncy blouse it can give you a certain androgynous allure this spring that will surely set you apart from all the girly-girls.

Staying up on the current trends for the season ahead is the easy part of deciding your wardrobe purchases because of the Internet and fashion magazines. The real challenge comes in with making the look your own. You can find images of how the trends were put together by the fashion week stylists, but putting your own twist on the next season’s hottest trends will set you apart as the hottest fashionista on campus.

Don’t doubt yourself, be creative, put things together that you normally wouldn’t and see what you come up with. Who knows — it may just be your greatest creation.
