CMA has ‘Lively Luncheon’

Out of all the classes you have had here at Eastern Michigan University, it’s very likely you’ve shared a classroom with someone of a different culture or ethnicity.

EMU has a variety of students from many different places, including international students from around the world.

The Center for Multicultural Affairs hosted a Lively Luncheon
Tuesday in the Student Center. These luncheons are held once a month, and each time a new topic is addressed. The topic discussed during this past Lively Luncheon was struggles faced by international students.

“As a growing society, it is important to be aware of international struggles,” special education major Stephanie Whitman said.

Topics during the discussion varied from experiences international students face when they are asked questions regarding their culture on campus, to the reactions they receive when they return home to their native country.

In attendance were members of the African-American Student Association, the Muslim Student Association, the International Student Association and the Center for Multicultural Affairs.

Whitman said the discussion was an “amazing” start to giving international students an active voice on campus.

She said the event was a great way for all students to come together and discuss as well as break down cultural barriers.

The event was free and worth a Learning Beyond the Classroom credit as well. Attendees were also provided with free soup, cookies, sandwiches, lemonade and coffee.

Events like these can help give students insight on what to do for future generations, Whitman said.
