It can be difficult for a pizza joint to make it in a college town. With so many options for pizza places, what makes one business have a lasting impression?
For Huron Pizza House, it has been creativity in their large menu. Huron Pizza House takes pizzas to a new level by making unique pizza flavors and having dishes that try to please everyone.
Last Monday, I brought two friends to Huron Pizza House to place an order for carry-out at 7 p.m. We were greeted by a friendly man behind the counter who gave us the low-down on the restaurant and told us which pizzas were the best sellers.
Huron Pizza House opened in January with its extensive and tempting menu. They have typical dishes like pizza, breadsticks and salad, but they go a few steps above the average pizza joint. This pizza house has unique specialty pizzas, such as their top-selling
margarita and rueben pizzas.
Huron Pizza House also goes beyond the average pizza joint by offering many different sandwiches, submarines, paninis and other entrees like fried chicken and rib tips.
As I looked over the menu, an item called the pepperoni pinwheels caught my attention. When I asked about them, the friendly employee told me to imagine a cinnamon bun, except with pepperoni and cheese instead of cinnamon and sugar.
One of my friends was drooling over a picture on the menu of a sandwich overflowing with pulled pork, while the other was hypnotized by an incredible deal on a large pizza. We ordered the pepperoni pinwheels, the pulled pork sandwich and a large pepperoni pizza with the intent of sharing it all.
Our entire meal cost $22.23. We got a deal on the pizza because we came to Huron Pizza House on a Monday, when large one-topping pizzas are only $7.99. This deal is available every Monday through Wednesday.
Huron Pizza House is mainly a delivery restaurant, but they have a few tables inside and an impressive hanging television. My friends and I were excited for our food but we had to wait twenty minutes, which for a pizza joint might be a bit long.
When we got our food, I wanted to try a pepperoni pinwheel first. I opened the takeout box and expected to see two or three pinwheels, but there were six. The pinwheels were made of bread dough that had been topped with mozzarella cheese and spicy pepperoni, and then rolled, baked and sliced.
I ate an end piece that had a great crust; it had been brushed with butter and salt. The pepperoni and cheese tasted well together, but I wished for some sauce inside the bread or a side of marinara. The flavor of the cheese blended with the bread.
I was more than disappointed when I took a large bite of a pinwheel
that was a middle piece and found raw bread dough in the center. I did not eat another pepperoni pinwheel after that; I had lost my appetite for them.
I tried a piece of pizza next; it was steaming hot and looked delicious. I enjoyed eating it folded-style because the cheese was so melty that it was falling off the slice. Although the pizza was a bit greasy, it was very good. The pepperonis had crispy edges and the sauce was full of herbs.
When I took a bite of the pulled pork sandwich, I was impressed. The sauce on the meat had a great flavor, and although there was a little too much coleslaw on top of the pork, it was a good accent.
The sandwich also came with a bag of chips.
Even after my friends and I were full, we were left with a lot of food. We had pepperoni pinwheels and half of a pizza leftover. For $22.23, we bought six pepperoni pinwheels, eight slices of pepperoni pizza, a large sandwich and a bag of chips.
Essentially, we paid for another two-to-three meals because of the leftover food, so I would call that a great deal.
Huron Pizza House may still have some kinks to work out, but their creative pizzas and extensive menu will help them stand out as a new Ypsilanti pizza place.

It is open Monday through Friday 11 a.m. to midnight, and on Sunday from noon to 10 p.m.
