As of 10 this morning, AnnMarie Gilbert has stepped down as the head coach for Eastern Michigan University’s women’s basketball team, effective April 6, 2012. After going 23-9 on the 2011-12 season and winning the Mid-American Conference Tournament, Gilbert and the Eagles went on to the NCAA Tournament where the team lost 80-48 to South Carolina.
Gilbert’s overall record since joining Eastern in 2007-08 is 94-64.
EMU Athletic Director Derrick Gragg said the search for a new head coach will begin immediately.
“I would like to thank AnnMarie for the success she has brought the program,” Gragg said in a statement. “AnnMarie has worked hard to help our student athletes succeed, and I wish her well in her future endeavors.”
In September 2010, EMU voluntarily reported violations of NCAA protocol following an internal investigation. There is still an ongoing investigation of the team. For details of the 2010 investigation and the self-imposed penalties, visit http://www.emich.edu/ncaa_violations/.
