Eagle golf teams play Invitationals April 14

The Eastern Michigan men’s golf team will head down to Columbus, Ohio, to participate at the Robert Kepler Invitational for the weekend of April 14-15. Meanwhile, the women’s team will play at the Indiana Invitational in Columbus, Ind., this weekend.

The fall season was a good one for the women’s team. The campaign got off to an eighth-place finish for EMU at the Mary Fossum Invitational in East Lansing on Sept. 17-18.

A first place finish in the Nittany Lion Invitational was followed by a third place finish in the Mid-American Conference Preview on Oct. 10-11.

Eastern Michigan finished one stroke behind the co-leaders of Toledo and Akron. The Eagles got another first place finish in the Hoosiers Fall Preview in Carmel, Ind. on Oct. 17-18.

The women’s team completed the Hoya Invitational on April 4-5 with a tie for second place with St. John’s and Nova Southeastern.

Senior Shannon Warner and junior Meredith Fairbairn played to fifth and sixth place finishes respectively for EMU in the final standings. The difference between them was just two strokes.

Old Dominion beat EMU by three strokes. The squad seeks its first team win since March 3-4 in the Red Rocks Invitational in Sedona, Ariz.

Warner was named MAC women’s golfer of the week for the second-straight week.

Warner got her third top-five finish this season after shooting a 77 final round. She also finished fourth in the University of Arkansas at Little Rock Women’s Golf Classic while the team finished third in the two-day event.

Coach Sandra Wagner wants to see the team play more consistently throughout a three-round event.

“It takes a group effort to play legitimate golf,” Wagner said. “We need to play three solid rounds.”

The 2011-12 season has been up and down for the men’s team.

The first event was a 10th place in the Northern Intercollegiate in Sugar Grove, Ill. on Sept. 10-11. Last season ended with two seventh-place finishes and another 10th place. The second half of the season began in Dade City, Fla. with Mid-American Conference Match Play.

Eastern Michigan got a runner-up finish to No. 1 Ball State in the championship match Feb. 14.

This past weekend, EMU competed in the Rutherford Intercollegiate in University Park, Pa. The Eagles finished sixth with a team score of 921.

Senior Derek East was the top finisher for Eastern Michigan with a tie for seventh after posting a 226 score.
Indiana will host the Indiana Invitational with 15 other schools playing in the event, including Kansas State, Michigan, Oakland, Ball State and Western Michigan. This is the last regular season event before the MAC Championship Tournament April 27-29 in Fishers, Ind.

Ohio State will host the Robert Kepler Invitational this weekend. Other schools participating include MAC opponent Kent State, Dayton, Xavier, Illinois and Wisconsin.

The men’s team plays one more event in West Lafayette, Ind. for the Boilermaker Invitational April 21-22 before competing in the MAC Championship in Nashport, Ohio on May 4-6.
