The Eastern Michigan University women’s swimming and diving team finished fifth in the Mid-American Conference championship meet, scoring 392 points in the three-day event in Akron, Ohio.
EMU junior swimmer Briana Emig got third place in the 500-yard freestyle. Emig also finished third in the 400 individual medley and 1,650 freestyle categories.
Freshman Jessie Godlewski got a runner-up finish in the 200 butterfly. Sophomore Jackie Swartz took third place in the same event.
Junior Kelly Hendricks came home with the 1-meter diving title after finishing second in the preliminaries. Hendricks finished almost two points ahead of her nearest opponent Ohio sophomore Mary Hillstrom.
EMU junior Danielle Hulvey set a pool record in the 3-meter dive preliminaries with 339.95. She claimed fourth place in the 3-meter dive finals.
Eastern Michigan finished eighth in the 200 freestyle, 400 individual medley and 400 freestyle relays. The top finish for an EMU relay team was a fourth place in the 800 freestyle relay.
With the season coming to a close for Eastern Michigan, Coach Peter Linn is satisfied with his team’s performance throughout the year.
“We had a great year,” Linn said. “We were in a rebuilding mode, and we’ll continue to rebuild.”
Toledo won the championship with 635 points while Ohio placed second with Miami coming in third. The Rockets ended the first day in third place and took the lead in the standings at the end of the second day and never looked back. The win was their second conference title in three seasons.
Many records were broken throughout the MAC championship meet. Toledo set 17 new meet records (eight pool, five championship meet and four conference) along with 12 school records.
Eastern Michigan achieved some awards during the weekend. Emig and Hendricks represented the Eagles in the All-MAC first team while Godlewski got second team honors. EMU diving coach Buck Smith was named the MAC’s women’s diving coach of the year for the third-straight season. Toledo had five swimmers take MAC honors.
