MAC meet leaves EMU in third place

Eastern Michigan University placed third during the Mid-American Conference wrestling championship meet.
Ten wrestlers competed in the March 4 event. They finished with four second-place finishes with Nick Whittenburg, Andrew Novak, Aaron Sulzer and Philip Joseph.

In the 125-pound tournament, Eagle Jared Germaine got off to an early start, taking an 11-8 decision against Gabriel Ramos of Oakland University. Germaine suffered a setback during the following round, taking a 6-2 loss to Nicholas Bedelyon of Kent State University.

Following his only loss, Germaine reeled off three victories, including a final win for the consolation prize against Nick Smith of Northern Illinois University, picking up a 7-4 third place finish for EMU.

In the 133-pound division, Andrew Novak earned third place and a first-round bye. Novak came out with a slow start, suffering a 2-1 overtime loss against Zach Horan of Central Michigan University.

Following the loss, Novak won over Andrew Hammer of Ohio University and Steve Mitcheff of KSU, picking up the second consolation prize for EMU. Hammer went to compete for, and win, the official second place prize.
In the 141-pound division, Cory Philips took a 9-1 loss to Kevin Smith of Buffalo.

Following Philips’ loss, the Eagles bounced back with a 7-0 decision against Darrin Boing of Ohio, which led to a third Eagle competing for a consolation prize, where he was defeated by Scott Mattingly of Central Michigan University.

In the 149-pound weight class, Jaylyn Bohl suffered an early loss to Ian Miller of KSU, preceding another setback for the Eagles when Bohl dropped another match to Andrew Romanchik of Ohio, losing the competition.

During the 157-pound tournament, Aaron Sulzer charged the Eagles once again with a 3-2 decision after his first-round bye. Following the victory was his match against Donnie Corby of CMU for first place. Sulzer would go on to come up short against Corby, winning a second-place position for the 157-pound class.

During the 165-pound tournament, Lester France was the only Eagle to compete, earning a first-round bye, then suffering back-to-back losses, losing the 165-pound tournament.

Philip Joseph of the 174-pound division reeled off two consecutive victories to face Nick Purdue of OU for first place, but lost in a 12-10 decision. Joseph took second place decision in the 174-pound division.

During the 285-pound tournament, Wesley Schroeder dominated his first match, taking a 9-0 victory, but was pinned during the following match. Later, in a third-place conciliation match against Peter Sturgeon of CMU, Sturgon picked up a final over Schroeder.

Central won the MAC championship, leading with 89 points. KSU followed with 79 points, while EMU ended the MAC Championship with 49 points.

EMU will travel to St. Louis, Missouri for its final match as several Eagles compete in the NCAA Championships.
