It’s that time of the year. It is MAC Championship time for the Eastern Michigan University men’s and women’s track & field athletes.
The women will be defending the championship they won at last year’s meet, while the men will try to take first place after capturing third at
last year’s MAC Championship Meet.
Akron University reigns as the defending MAC champion. The last time the men’s track and field team won the MAC Championship was in 2010, so they
will be looking to capture their 13th title for indoor track in the last sixteen years.
“The team has progressed all season, and they are well prepared for the MAC Championships,” head coach John Goodridge said.
The men will be looking for good performances from freshman Cameron Bolton, who has been impressive this season. Bolton has the sixth best time in the MAC in the 60-meter (00:06.93) and has the second best time in the MAC in both the 200-meter (00:21.58) and 400-meter (00:48.37).
“I’m looking forward to competing and possibly putting up a time that will qualify me to run at the NCAA championships this year as a freshman,” Bolton said. “I’m always confident in myself going into a meet because I know not many people can say they have the same work ethic and heart as me, so I like to use that as motivation when I run.”
Other Eagle runners expected to have a good showing are team captain Jay Saunders along with Josh George, Grzegorz Kalinowski, Terefe Ejigu and Max Babits.
Saunders has been impressive this season with the tenth best time in the MAC (00:06.96) in the 60-meter and the fifth best time in the 200-meter (00:21.83). Ejigu and Kalinowski have been performed well in multiple events this year.
The women are defending the championship this year after their impressive showing last year.
“We are excited to head to Akron to try to defend our MAC title,” Coach Susan Parks said. “We know that it is going to be a tough challenge as the field is very even this year with possibly five or six teams having a chance at the championship.”
Both men and women will need to pull together and work as a team in order to succeed.
The MAC Championship Meet will be held in Akron, Ohio on Feb. 24 and 25.
