Women to finish season against MAC foes

The next two meets for the Eastern Michigan University women’s swim and dive team will be against two Mid-American Conference teams from Ohio, with the home finale against Miami at 5 p.m. Friday and on the road against Toledo at 1 p.m. Saturday.

EMU (5-3, 2-1 MAC) is on a two-meet win streak, with wins against Wayne State and Akron last weekend. One of the strengths for EMU is junior Briana Emig, who has posted top times in the MAC for the 500, 1,000 and 1,650 freestyle events along with the 400 individual medley.

EMU is 1-2 in the MAC in the 1-meter dive with sophomore Danielle Hulvey and junior Kelly Kendricks.

Miami (5-2, 2-1 MAC) handed Ball State its first loss last weekend with a 178-122 victory in Muncie, Ind.
Miami enters with strong swimmers in juniors Bekka Westrick and Leah Thornton.

Westrick has top times in the MAC in the 50-, 100- and 200-freestyle events along with the 100-butterfly. Thornton holds the best times in the 100 and 200 backstroke categories. Westrick got two victories in the 50- and 100-freestyle events against Ball State. Sophomore Nikki Craft has the best score in the MAC in 3-meter diving with a 325.35 in the Miami Invitational and took first place in the same event against Ball State.
“The divers have to step up their game,” freshman Lauren Dark said.

The RedHawks come in with the best relay teams in the MAC with the best times in the 400 and 800 freestyle relays and also hold the top position in the 200 and 400 medley relays.

“Miami and Toledo are going to be really strong teams,” Emig said. “It’s going to be tough.”

Seniors Michele Gingher, Lily Glaeser, Amanda Kiefer and Samantha Nameth will compete in their final home meet Friday.
The MAC Championship meet will take place in Akron, Feb. 23-25.
