The Eastern Michigan University women’s basketball team used 59 rebounds, 19 steals and eight blocked shots to defeat the Akron Zips 91-46 Saturday at the Convocation Center.
The Eagles’ record is 14-7 and 6-2 in the Mid-American Conference.
The Eagles had three of their players score in double figures and two of them with double-digit rebounding efforts.
Tavelyn James was the leading scorer of the game with 31. Natachia Watkins was not too far behind with a double-double of 26 points and 13 rebounds.
Paige Redditt was able to control the paint, scoring 12 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Olivia Fouty contributed with eight points and eight rebounds.
The Eagles finished the game with an overall field goal percent of 44.7 while shooting 50 percent in the first half. The Eagles were also sank 11-of-18 free throws.
Carly Young was the leading scorer for the Zips (9-13, 3-5 MAC) with eight points. She was also able to pull down five
rebounds. Hanna Luburgh and Denver McLean both scored five points and grabbed five rebounds.
Struggling to make shots, the Zips ended the game with a field-goal percent of 24.5. Their free throw percentage was 62.5.
The Eagles acquired the lead early in the game and never let up as they scored basket after basket against the Zips.
During the first 10 minutes of the game, the Eagles had already built a 28-4 lead. James was able to knock down four three-pointers during the first half.
The Eagles snagged the biggest lead of the first half with 1:06 to go in the with a score of 51-16. The first half ended with the Eagles up 51-19.
The Eagles shot 50 percent during the first half while the Zips shot just 16.67 percent. The Zips also had 14 turnovers in
the first half and a total of 27 for the game.
To begin the second half, Eastern would not relent, continuing to score on the Zips. The Eagles were able to keep a lead of at least 30 points throughout the second half. The Zips were not able to catch up and the end result was a 45-point win for the Eagles.
EMU travels to face the Ohio University Bobcats at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
