Well it’s the start to another great semester at Eastern and I’m guessing you’re tired of campus food already. As a fellow college student, I know it’s a struggle to get up and out for those early classes.
By getting there on time you might be missing a breakfast or anything quick and easy to ‘grab-and-go.’ If by chance some of you are, then I know a great local bakery, just down Washtenaw Ave that’s perfect for a hot coffee and a delicious donut.
Just a stone’s throw away from campus, Dom’s Bakery, located at 1305 Washtenaw, is an adorable little coffee and donut shop that’s perfect for a snack or even some late night studying. This bakery, open twenty-four hours and run by the Asian family of Ly, Fea and Paul Chav, is sure to please the senses.
“My parents, Ly and Fea, bought the building about fifteen years ago and turned it into a bakery,” Paul said as I stopped in, bought a half dozen cinnamon sugar donuts and asked him about the bakery.
When asked, Ly said, “We bake about fifty dozen donuts during the week and about one hundred dozen on Saturday and Sunday so we’re busy for a small bakery.”
While unsure of how many customers they serve it’s apparent that Dom’s is a local favorite.
While a half dozen of donuts is set at the price of $4.25 and a dozen between $8 and $12, it’s a great deal and well worth it.
Not only do they serve donuts, but a variety of pastries as well. You can get bagels, muffins, cookies, cupcakes and cakes.
You could get a cookie for as low as fifty cents. If you ever need a cake they have a wide variety for all occasions ranging in cost from an 8-inch cake for $15.90 to a 14-inch for $37.90, or even sheet cakes.
They also have a variety of beverages to go along with your baked goods as well. From coffee and cappuccinos, to Coke products, juice and milk, Dom’s has everything you need for a great morning breakfast or for a treat later on in the day.
For those who have been there I’m sure you’re all wondering who the infamous Dom character is.
When I asked Paul he simply laughed and smiled as he told me there was no Dom, the name simply sounded like a good name for someone’s bakery. Needless to say, I was surprised there was no “Dom” of this bakery.
So while you’re out and thinking of somewhere to go for a quick snack or a late place to study, remember that Dom’s Bakery on Washtenaw is always there to welcome you in and sure to give you a tasty freshly baked treat as well.
