The Eastern Michigan University women’s basketball team will travel to take on the University of Detroit Mercy at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
The Eagles have had a strong start to their season with a 6-3 record. Two of those losses have been during close overtime games against Michigan State (59-60) and the University of Missouri Kansas City (68-70).
Tavelyn James, who was recently named the Mid-American Conference player of the week after setting an all-time record for scoring for the program, has been a strong offensive player for the Eagles and averages 25.1 points.
During the recent game against the University of Michigan, James had 19 points in the first 10 minutes of the game.
The top rebounders for the Eagles have been Paige Redditt and Olivia Fouty. Both players have been key in crashing the boards and scoring off of put backs. In the game against Michigan, Fouty had 12 rebounds and Redditt had eight. Fouty scored 19 points during the game to help the Eagles to victory. Desyree Thomas has also shown her skill at point guard and has handled the ball during intense plays on the court.
Detroit’s team, however, have not been so successful. It has lost all of its games but one against Ball State University.
The team‘s star player is Shareta Brown, who scores a lot of points for the team and grabs a lot of rebounds.
Brown has averaged 17 points and nine rebounds. Other high scorers and rebounders for the team are Demeisha Fambro, Lauren Allen and Senee Shearer. In the Titans’ last game, Shearer hit a career-high five three-pointers and ended with a career-high of 15 points.
In order for Detroit to win against Eastern, it will need to find players who are able to guard James, Redditt and Fouty. Detroit is going to need solid defense to guard the Eagles. The team will need to have a fast offense also to keep up with the pace of the Eagles’ game.
The Eagles have been able to use their offensive game to their advantage, and it has definitely paid off. They have counted on James for three pointers and Fouty and Redditt to clean up the boards. Though they still have to play tight defense in order to make their offense work, they have done a good job so far this season.
To lower their turnovers, the Eagles need to play with control but with the same intensity they have been using this whole season. The team will need to shut down Detroit’s Brown, who is a threat with scoring and rebounds. If the Eagles are able to do that, then they will be able to score their way to a win.
The Eagles have a good chance of beating Detroit if they play their offensive game and defend to the best of their ability.
Detroit will need to step up their game in order to defeat the Eagles.
